SINGAPORE’S FIRST DUAL-PURPOSE DESALINATION PLANT BEGINS OPERATIONS

The Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant (KMEDP), Singapore’s fourth desalination plant, began operations on 29 June 2020. Set against the stunning backdrop of Singapore’s Central Business District skyline, the large-scale, dual-mode plant is the first of its kind that can treat both freshwater and seawater! Capable of producing about 30 million gallons of fresh drinking water per day, the KMEDP will strengthen Singapore’s water supply resilience in the face of increasingly dry weather conditions caused by climate change.

Moreover, the facility highlights a breathtakingly innovative design, situating the treatment equipment completely underground and featuring a lush green rooftop for community recreation. Its landscaping also uses environmentally friendly elements to retain rainwater for reuse in irrigation and the facility’s water features!
